The ingredients needed to make Mangalorean Rava Pundi:
  1. Prepare 1 kg Rice Rava
  2. Take 1 tsp Mustard seeds
  3. Take 1 tsp Urad dal
  4. Make ready 3 tsp Oil
  5. Get 1 cup grated coconut
  6. Take as per taste Salt
  7. Get 3 cups water

Pundi is a soft round shaped rice dumpling recipe which belongs to Mangalore cuisine. It is a native dish of Tulu Nadu region. It is made by grinding, tempering, cooking and final steaming the rice flour. It is very easy to make like other South Indian cuisines.

Steps to make Mangalorean Rava Pundi:
  1. Take a wide pan/kadai. Add 3 tsp oil, 1 tsp Mustard seeds and 1 tsp Urad Dal into it. Saute it for a minute in low flame, the mustard seeds start popping.
  2. Once the mustard seeds starts to pop, add 3 cups of water, 1 cup of grated coconut and 1 tsp Salt. Stir gently and let it cook for 5 minutes.
  3. Now add 1 kilogram of Rice Rava. Mix well, see that no lumps are formed.
  4. Cook for 5 minutes, the rava has to cook well and it starts to thicken.
  5. Turn off the gas and let the rava mix cool for a bit, not completely. Taste the rava mix and add salt if necessary.
  6. Rub a little water in your palms, take the rava mix and make oval shaped pundi like you see in the picture below. You can also make round balls & shape them according to the size you want.
  7. Steam cook the Rava Pundis for 20 minutes in medium flame.
  8. Serve them hot! We usually have them with spicy horse-gram chutney or mango pickle with a drizzle of coconut oil on top, which is the best combo. It tastes the best with any curry you make for lunch or the leftover gravy you have. We had made taro seeds buttermilk curry for lunch so served these delicious Pundis with them. You can also have these Pundis with thick yoghurt and mango pickle!
